Scott McGehee and David Siegel, who are both writers and filmmakers, have a sporadic filmography. Their best works to date are What Maisie Knew (2012) and The Deep End (2001), but Montana Story is an ineptly handled and poorly paced indie drama whose fair story deserved a bit more grit.

Cal (Owen Teague) and Erin (Haley Lu Richardson), estranged siblings, act uneasily after reconciling in their terminally sick father's old ranch as revelations of their history mount. They went seven years without speaking to one another. We are sent back by their incremental revelations, and we have our own perceptions of the family and its relationships. However, in a family settlement of past traumatic experiences that rounds off the angles are a little too much to reach right to the heart, one experiences more apathy than empathy along the way.

The remaining characters, such as Kenyan private nurse Ace (Gilbert Owuor) and longtime housekeeper Valentina (Kimberly Guerrero), are underdeveloped and appear to be there solely to add a few more superfluous minutes to the movie. I also found a number of shots that were duplicated. Who needs to see Erin slaughter a chicken with her bare hands to believe she was a New York chef? This is a clumsy attempt to create something profound.
