"As They Made Us Lookmovie" feels like two separate movies have been haphazardly combined for the first half or so. In one, Abigail played by Agron is a newly divorced woman with two boisterous youngsters who attempts to find love once more. On the other hand, as the patriarch descends further into a crippling illness, Abigail must navigate the growing demands of her dysfunctional family.
The latter supposedly informs the former since flashbacks show her father abusing her physically and verbally as well as their heated arguments. However, the back-and-forth structure gives the movie an uncomfortable rhythm in the beginning; "As They Made Us" finds more stability when it concentrates on the problems of the present.
In brief, shocking flashbacks, Hoffman's Eugene is revealed to be a temperamental artist who was a menace in his early years. As his life nears an end, Eugene is now frail and disoriented. Bergen's Barbara, his patient wife, is such a narcissist that she is incapable of truly caring for him and instead takes advantage of his dependence to make fun of him.
While doing so, Barbara pushes away the patient's numerous medical professionals, forcing Abigail to intervene and act as a mediator. Because of all these problems and more, the older brother Nathan has been distant from the family for the past 20 years, but Abigail is pleading with him to come back, make amends, and say his final goodbyes.
The task of sifting through the rubbish and noise falls to Abigail because everyone is, in general, horrible. However, this is not a crazy, messed-up family comedy. The most moving parts of "As They Made Us Moviesjoy" are its quiet, private, ordinary scenes, and Bialik, mercifully, stays away from hyperbole as the movie draws to a heartbreaking finale.
Anyone who has experienced the agonizing wait for a loved one to pass away after a protracted illness will be able to relate to this book's tasteful, realistic depiction of it, as well as the awkward situations that arise when relatives attempt to put their differences aside during such difficult times of loss and grief.
